Jones cup 2012 vs Iran
I know many would hate me if I say Team Philippines played bad in this game. The game is already in their hands just a few minutes ago, but it has to come to the last shot from the Iranians. The game was close in the first half with the score tied at halftime. The trend continues as the game is just as close as you would want. In the 4th quarter, we lead by as much as 10pts, but all of them were erased by the Iranians.
The Good: We won the game.
The Bad: We missed layups after layups, that is the worst thing that can happen. I counted probably 4times where we missed wide open layups. Even coach Chot is very angry with the team.
The Turning Point: Got to be the good pass from Ranidel to Douthit when everything was already going nowhere, then suddenly a dunk by Douthit gave as a 5pt lead.
The Lesson: I know it is a very tense games but we have to make freethrows at end game.
*I saw coach Chot's face at end game when Kamrani, Iranian player, missed a wide open transition three. He was very dissapointed on how the game have ended. If we were to sink in freethrows, the game would have been a sure thing, but it has come to LUCK that wins it all.
Still, I would like to congratulate the team for winning the game and hope to win the next two games.

Jones cup 2012 vs Lebanon
Going into the game against a 1-4 win-loss record team seems to be an easy task for the Gilas squad, especially coming from a come from behind win against Japan. But that is not the case because the Lebanese just proved that they are not a pushover in this tournament.
At halftime, the lead was in double digit and the Japan game did have the same lead though it is in the final period, but the team were able to fight back. so it seems like the game can still turn around, but it did not happen.
The Good: we were able to rest our main players for the game against the defending champion Iran. We also let our young players in Garvo Lanete and Matt Rosser to taste some action against the bigger Lebanese.
The Bad: Our players didn't show up on defense. Never mind the big lead if after a game the score is 60-40 because you know you held your opponent to 60 pts only. It is really a bad game for your team. But if you give up as much as 90 pts in the game. You got to question the defense.
The Turning Point: Jarrid Famous, former PBA import now import for the Lebanon team, just outmuscle and outhustle Marcus Douthit and the whole team. It actually started as early as 2nd quarter, so we were dominated in the rebounding department.
The Lesson: so far in the first 4 wins of the Philippines team, our defense is the key to win games. We hold our opponents to under 80pts per game. So to have a shot to be on top of this tournament is to play hard nose defense, this means denying the ball, boxing out your man, and contesting every shot. I know it is difficult especially if the opponent is bigger but with heart, desire, and team effort, meaning team help defense, we can win games.

Jones cup 2012 vs Japan
Another come from behind win by the Gilas squad.
Two words to describe the team. Veterans and Heart.
Veterans. Being down by as much as 13pts. They have the composure to finish it strong. It started in the first few minutes of the third quarter down by 11pts., then they had their run by pressuring defense, but after a few runs, they commited turnovers after turnovers and the lead was back to 8 or something. The game was just like that. But in the 4th quarter, the rally of the Philippine team began and they forced multiple turnovers, while started to make shots. Give credit to the rebounding of Marcus Douthit giving the team 2nd chance opportunities. Gary David and Jeff Chan once again make their shots. But the one that really fired up the team was Gabe Norwood. He just played an all around game and making the go ahead basket 3pts shot.

After a facial dunk. Look at the fire in Norwood's Face!! HEART. |
Heart. If it weren't for this, they wouldn't even fight back and try to
make it close. But they just didn't give up on the game being down by double
digit going into the 4th quarter. Not just making it close but win it.
Analysis of the game:
The Bad: In the first half, we were unlucky not making shots, then it continued to forcing shots and turnovers. It also affected our defense as we're not fighting over screens. The second quarter really make it worst as we just scored 10pts in the quarter.

The Good: It really started in the 4th quarter where I really saw the defensive tenacity of our team. Many would say that this team can only score because of our shooters Fonacier, David, and Chan. But the defense of the shooters what really helped us win. The lock down defense didn't allow the Japanese to score points and were forced to commit turnovers. Then the defense turned out to be our great offense as we got our points from fastbreaks and freethrows (advantage foul).
Also, I noticed how they defend those 3pts shooters, they wisely avoid making contact to prevent fouls. Bravo!
The Turning Point: I got to give credit to coach Chot in this. The spark really happened when coach inserted 4 guard lineup with Tenorio, David, Chan, and Norwood. This really make our team quick which is a counter to the quickness of the Japanese. This means that Norwood will play PF which he did pretty well because of his athleticism.

Jones cup 2012 vs Korea
Korea is the team that keeps on breaking the heart of Philippine basketball. Their last minute 3pts shots are well documented against Philippines but yet it happened everytime we play them. It happened just last year where our dream of making it 3rd place in the FIBA Asia olympic qualifier just get beaten by them.
Same goes to this game wherein the game is tied with less than 2mins in the game clock. I have a negative feeling that we might not be able to pull it again. Yet, one guy proved me wrong. Gary David. He just crushed the heart of the Koreans as he nailed 2 midrange in your face jumpers to give the team its needed margin. Just simply clutch. The shot may seem awkward but the shot is just crazy.
But before this thing, the first quarter was all Gilas as they make those outside shots and getting those rebounds. But in the 2nd quarter, the Koreans have slowly gaining their form as they make 3pt baskets and their import Juan Patillo is making life miserable for players defending him by drawing fouls and making shots. It ended 42-40 at halftime with Gilas leads by just 2.
In the 3rd quarter, the Koreans made 3 consecutive 3pts which gives them a double digit lead. One thing I noticed is that Gilas' defense is very poor, the rotation is slow, they give unconstested shots to the opponents which they take advantage of. But with the team not willing to give up, they showed their tough defense in the 4th quarter and getting the win.
My assessment of this game is that the Gilas team needs to improve more in communicating on their defense. It is very clear in the 3rd quarter that the effort is not there. But the good thing is that they adjusted in the 4th quarter while driving it hard on the offensive end which drawn foul. I would love to give credit to the players for not giving up and shown toughness. Their next opponent will be tomorrow against Japan at 5pm televise on AKTV.

Jones Cup 2012 vs Chinese Taipei B
Chinese Taipei B team of this years Jones Cup is a very young team with all their players are below 24 years old comparing to the Philippine's team which composes of veterans from their mother teams in the PBA.
It was really expected of them to beat this team since the inexperience team won't have the overall game of veterans. The game ended with a score of 99-68 in favor of the Gilas team.
The team showed that they are a stronger team by having a well balance scoring game and even having a young player in Garvo Lanete to top score for the team with 20pts.
I don't think there is much to argue and comment about this game since it is already expected for the team to win. Their next opponent will be the team from South Korea.

Jones Cup 2012 vs Jordan
This is the first game of Gilas 2 since it was revamp with PBA stars instead of the previous amateur team. I would like to share my assessment of this game.
LA Tenorio B+
I think he did a good job starting for the team. Although his height is a disadvantage against the taller Jordanians, he was able to maintain the teams offense. I gave a grade of B+ because it is just his first game as a gilas member and yet he performed well. Although the turnovers a concern.
Sol Mercado A
This guy is a surprise. I know he can play the point as he is doing in the PBA, yet he was able to do those quick crossovers against taller defenders, it is like watching Allen Iverson with much strength. On fastbreaks, he reminds me of how Cyrus Baguio outrun his opponents and finish strong. I could have easily given an A+ as he's the one who sparked the team in the 2nd quarter run, but still gave him an A grade because he has not shown his shooting touch from the outside. If he could get that, he'll be a beast on the floor.
Gary David B
David's main purpose in the team is to light out the scoreboard. In this game, he has not really shown his true form. His 3pt shots have not been falling so often but it's still ok since it is also his 1st game as Gilas member. I gave a B grade since I have high expectations from him to really fireup and make those 3s, which did not happen in the game.
Larry Fonacier and Jeff Chan B
Both of them are known shooters in the PBA. They basically have the same style of game which is shooting from the 3 and they do drive to the basket when opportunity arises. I gave them B grade since they were not really in the groove of hitting those long range bombs but credit to them as they hit some crucial baskets. It is either to stop a run or giving more breathing space for the team.
Gabe Norwood B
Gabe is at 6'5'' plays the Small Forward position for the team, but he do play some point guard which is very versatile that's is why he is an important part of the team. I gave B grade since I really don't expect him to score and in the game, he made turnovers which results to turnover points by the opponent. He just needs to handle himself well on the defensive end and the offense is just a bonus.
Matt Ganuela Rosser C+
Matt is a new recruit of Gilas 2. He played US college basketball and is a fil-am born in the Philippines which makes him eligible to play international games for the Philippines. I am not familiar with his game but he shows potential since he has long arms and defensive mentality. A C+ grade would just be enough as he is still a project player.
Ranidel de Ocampo B+
He is a mainstay for the national team having been part of Gilas 1. His outside shot for a power forward guy is his asset as he forces bigman inside to go outside. A B+ grade is given to him is because he shown great leadership on the court, and his defense really showed up. I hope he can continue this form.
Enrico Villanueva and JayR Reyes B
These guys are enforcers of the team, their tough task is to defend the post even if they are undersized. They showed great resilience inside the paint and not afraid of guys literally bigger than them. So I gave them a B because of their effort down low. I hope they can also contribute in the offensive end.
Sonny Thoss B-
A backup center for our naturalized player Douhtit. He is probably the best backup center we could get at the moment, since projected Fajardo is joining the PBA and still raw. A grade of B- is given because he wasn't able to knockdown open jumpers which should be his game.
Marcus Douhtit A+
What can you say about this guy? He is just an all around player. He even didn't play much in the first half yet he top scored for the team.
For the team A-
I gave an A- grade because the fact that they won the game, but the turnovers are still a problem. We may say that they are not really familiar with each other's game, but some turnovers happened because they are bullied defensively.
