Jones cup 2012 vs Lebanon

Going into the game against a 1-4 win-loss record team seems to be an easy task for the Gilas squad, especially coming from a come from behind win against Japan. But that is not the case because the Lebanese just proved that they are not a pushover in this tournament.

At halftime, the lead was in double digit and the Japan game did have the same lead though it is in the final period, but the team were able to fight back. so it seems like the game can still turn around, but it did not happen.

The Good: we were able to rest our main players for the game against the defending champion Iran. We also let our young players in Garvo Lanete and Matt Rosser to taste some action against the bigger Lebanese.

The Bad: Our players didn't show up on defense. Never mind the big lead if after a game the score is 60-40 because you know you held your opponent to 60 pts only. It is really a bad game for your team. But if you give up as much as 90 pts in the game. You got to question the defense.

The Turning Point: Jarrid Famous, former PBA import now import for the Lebanon team, just outmuscle and outhustle Marcus Douthit and the whole team. It actually started as early as 2nd quarter, so we were dominated in the rebounding department.

The Lesson: so far in the first 4 wins of the Philippines team, our defense is the key to win games. We hold our opponents to under 80pts per game. So to have a shot to be on top of this tournament is to play hard nose defense, this means denying the ball, boxing out your man, and contesting every shot. I know it is difficult especially if the opponent is bigger but with heart, desire, and team effort, meaning team help defense, we can win games.
